INTAKE Lecturers who use gestures and picturesque language. Pictures, videos, posters, slides Flowcharts Underlining, different colors, highlighters Textbooks with diagrams pictures and graphs Symbols and white space STRATEGIES Reconstruct the images in different ways, try different arrangements. Redraw your pages from memory. Replace words with symbols or images. Merely look at your pages. OUTPUT Draw things, use diagrams. Write exam answers. Recall the pictures you made on your pages. Practice turning your visuals back to words. visual LEARNER - Different formats - Space - Graphs & Charts - Diagrams - Maps & Plans Preference uses symbolism and different formats, fonts and colors to emphasize important points. Does not just include video and pictures that show real images it is not visual merely because it is shown on a screen. PICTIONARY

INTAKE Attend class, discussions and tutorials. Discuss topics with peer and teachers. Explain new ideas to other. Use a tape recorder. Put information with real life stories, jokes, examples. Describe visuals to people who were not present. Leave room in notes for “filling in” later. STRATEGIES You notes may be poor because you prefer to listen. Plan to expand your notes later by talking to others. Put your notes on tape. Ask people to “hear” your explanation of the topic. Read your notes out loud and summarize to yourself. OUTPUT Imagine talking to the examiner. Spend time in quiet places recalling answers. Speak your answers out loud as you write them. Aural LEARNER - Listening - Discussing - Talking - Questioning - Recalling Preference for information that is spoken or heard and the use of question is an important part of the learning strategy. INTAKE Lists, headings, dictionaries, glossarieds, definitions Handouts, textbooks Readings- library Notes (often verbatim) Teachers who use words well and have lots of information in sentences and notes. Essays STRATEGIES Write out the words again and again. Read your notes saliently. Rewrite the ideas and principles into other words. Organize and diagram, graph into statement e.g. “The trend is…” Turn reactions, actions, diagrams, charts and flows into words. Imagine your lists arranged in multiple choice questions. OUTPUT Write exam answers. Practice with multiple choice questions. Write paragraphs, beginning and endings. Write your lists and label (a,b,c,1,2,3) Read & Write LEARNER - Lists - Notes - Text in all formats Preference uses the printed word as the most important way to convey and receive information. You will remember the “real” things that happened. Put plenty of examples into your summary. Use case studies and applications to help with principles and abstract concepts. Recall lab work, field trips and examples. OUTPUT Write practice answers, paragraph. Study and practice through role-play and developing case studies.
