Balanced and Unbalanced Forces
When the brakes are applied, the drag force increases and the car decelerates. Drag forces, due to friction and air resistance, act in the opposite direction. The resultant force decreases and the acceleration decreases. When the forces acting on the car are balanced, the resultant force is zero. It stops accelerating and moves at a constant speed. When the force produced by the engine is transferred to the rear wheels (via the transmission system) the forces on the car are unbalanced and it accelerates. 110 120 100 140 100 120 80 mph 160 80 rpm x100 130 60 180 40 200 60 140 20 220 40 150 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 20 160 Neutral Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Drag Force (Thrust) Forward Force Visit For 100’s of free powerpoints Resultant Force Resultant Force
