20 September, 2018

2 BLOODHOUND SSC - Mission Statement
To create a national surge in the popularity of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics - (STEM) subjects It’s all about you and getting you kids involved in STEM subjects/events

3 BLOODHOUND SSC Bloodhound SSC Project Intro.wmv (trim to 3mins, cutting off bullet vs car clip at end or pause video at Engineering Adventure)

4 Jeantaud Duc -1898 Count Gaston managed 39.24mph in 1898 in an electric powered vehicle, at that speed they thought the driver wouldn’t be able to breathe – although the bicycle speed record was 59mph! The Count used the best available STEM resources available at the time.

5 The World Land Speed Record
1904 – mph Car: Gordon-Brillie Driver: Louis Rigolly 1904 – 103mph – Over 100mph within 6yrs of the first record and the basic Land Speed Record rules were set during this year. Twice within an hour, 4 wheels, 2 steerable and a human driver. Next slide – Malcolm Campbell 1920s/30s big for fast cars!

6 The World Land Speed Record
Thrust Fast forward 70yrs - Richard was keen on speed and an “adventurer” rather than an engineer Built a car based on things he thought would work! Jet engine from Rolls Royce, wings like F1 car! High speed 140mph in Who could Richard have spoken to or involved to make a better car? STEM people. Next Slide – Thrust 2 Richard decided to involve engineers! Whoops!

7 The World Land Speed Record
Broke the LSR! Do you think we can go faster? Car not hugely aerodynamic! BUT – best technology of the day. (7mph faster and would have lifted off!) Next Slide – Thrust SSC Next aim was to go supersonic! Thrust 2 mph Richard Noble

8 The World Land Speed Record
Thrust SSC mph - Mach 1.02 Andy Green Andy Green – SSC! Blackrock Desert Nevada - Does anyone know what SSC stands for? – 1st Supersonic Car – Can we go faster again? Current record holder. Next slide – Bloodhound SSC Next aim 1000mph!

9 Bloodhound SSC

10 CFD CFD and Computer models – Does anyone know what this picture represents? They usually say heat, but this image shows pressure.

11 EJ200 from a Eurofighter TYPHOON
Jet Engine EJ200 from a Eurofighter TYPHOON What are we using to power the car? We have ONE latest generation jet engine from a Eurofighter, which has TWO. Who will be faster? Shall we find out?

12 Jet Race Bloodhound Race.wmv – Why was our car quicker? Did anyone notice TWO flames coming from the back of our car?

13 Hybrid Rocket Hybrid rocket using liquid (High Test Peroxide – HTP – hair dye) and solid fuel (Hydroxl Terminated Polybutadiene – HTPB – the same as the synthetic rubber on the soles of their trainers). The rocket burns for upto 20secs and uses a fuel pump that would fill a bath tub in 3secs powered by an F1 engine.

14 Rocket Testing 18 Inch Hybrid JP2 LR PPT.wmv – This is at QUARTER power and the recent rocket firing in Newquay (Oct 2012) was half power.

15 How do we stop? So we’re going really fast, but how do we stop? There are 4 braking methods, with 3 physical systems being on the car – airbrakes, parachutes and disk brakes. The 4th one is due to the amount drag generated at 1000mph, so as soon as Andy Green turns off the power 15tonnes of drag will slow the car down by 65mph every sec.

16 The first 1000mph car All of these things combine to make Bloodhound SSC

17 South Africa Hakskeen Pan
Where are we going to run this car? Dried lake bed is an alkali playa and a bit like an apple crumble – crusty on top and squidgy underneath, which offers some give for running solid wheels.

18 The Desert Layout Base Camp Tarmac Road Public Viewing Area
Public Access Road Timing Stand Team Access Road The potential layout of the track and our camp in the desert. The dried lake bed does flood each year during the rainy season. Next slide – Clearing the stones Fence 18

19 Desert Preparation 317 people have cleared by hand 22 million square metres of track, equivalent to 3000 football pitches or 210 O2 Arenas. 98% unemployment rate in this area. Anything bigger than a pea has been removed and so far they’ve picked up 6000tonnes!

20 Being built in Bristol now 850mph run in South Africa 2013
What happens next… Being built in Bristol now 850mph run in South Africa 2013 1050mph run in South Africa 2014 Parts are being made all over the UK and then put together in Bristol (currently next door to the SS Great Britain). There will be a total of runs slowly building up the speed each time, with low speed (upto 250mph) on a UK runway in summer 2013.

21 It’s Your Adventure! Either Bloodhound_Highlights_Elbow_online_and_team_use_only.mpg OR BLOODHOUND_FINAL_CUT_H264_HQ.wmv
