2. Aims for today
To deepen your understanding of national testing and our school assessment system.
To find out about the tests and assessments that your child will complete this academic year.
To have a go! and see the standard expected of your children.
To split into year groups to hear more from the class teachers, talk together and ask questions.

3. School Based Assessment
The new curriculum is based on the concept of mastery and enrichment rather than rapid acceleration through levels.
Children are assessed by their teachers against the Age Related Expectations in all year groups. We use a programme called classroom Monitor to track progress.
Objectives for each year group form the basis of teacher assessment.
The band objectives are broken down into steps:

4. School based assessment
The majority of children would be expected to working at the ‘Expected’ step by the end of the year to be at ARE (age related expectations)
Teacher Assessment each half term. Individual data is discussed in Pupil Progress Meetings.
The data for year groups is analysed by senior leaders leading to interventions and other actions

5. National Testing in Primary Education
Children are tested/assessed periodically throughout their school career, at the moment the assessment schedule is:
EYFS profile assessment, end of Rec, age 5
Phonic screening test, end of Y1, age 6
SATs testing, end of Y2, age 7
SAT testing, end of Y6, age 11
Coming in 2021…and beyond…
Times table testing, end of Y4 age 9
Possible abolishment of SATs in Y2, children will be assessed on entry to school (YR) and on exit (Y6)

6. Interim Assessment Frameworks
Only used in Y2 and Y6.
They are only intended for use in making judgements at the end of a key stage.
They set out the standards a pupil will be assessed against.
Teachers must refer to the frameworks to report their judgements at the end of key stages 1 and 2.
They don’t include full coverage of the national curriculum. They focus on key aspects for assessment. ‘The pupil can..’
The KS1 frameworks used in 2016/17 will be used in 2017/18.
This year there has been some changes to the writing framework for both KS1 and KS2.

7. SATS KS1 – Yr2 KS2 – Yr6 Tests are marked externally.
All tests will be taken in May No set day/time.
Tests for Reading and Maths (Arithmetic and Reasoning)
The test for Grammar, punctuation and spelling is not statutory this year.
Writing is based on the collection of work throughout the year.
Tests are marked internally. Judgements may be moderated by the LA.
Overall judgement is still based on teacher assessment.
National testing Week beginning 14th May 2018
Reading paper.
Grammar and punctuation paper.
Spelling test.
Arithmetic paper.
2 Reasoning maths papers.
No ‘Level’ 6 papers, instead some harder questions in all 3 subjects.
Tests are marked externally.

8. Science
KS1 – Yr2
KS2 – Yr6
Science teacher assessment is based on work completed during Year 1 and Year 2.
To provide evidence that pupils demonstrate consistent attainment of all of the statements within the standard, teachers will need to draw on assessment judgements that have been made earlier. This will include all elements of the key stage 2 science curriculum that have been taught before the final year 2 years of the key stage.
Random sampling Science tests take place every 2 year. The next sample tests will be in 2018.

9. Key stage 1 frameworks: standards
For English reading, English writing and mathematics pupils will be grouped into 4 categories:
working towards the expected standard
working at the expected standard
working at greater depth within the expected standard, or
a category for those pupils who do not meet the ‘working towards the expected standard’
For science pupils will be grouped into 2 categories:
working at the expected standard, or
a category for those pupils who do not meet the standard

10. Key stage 2 frameworks: standards
For English writing pupils will be grouped into 4 categories:
working towards the expected standard
working at the expected standard
working at greater depth within the expected standard or
a category for pupils who do not meet the ‘working towards the expected standard’
For English reading, mathematics and science pupils will be grouped into 2 categories:
working at the expected standard or
a category for pupils who do not meet the standard

11. Changes for 2017 to 2018
The ‘Primary assessment in England’ public consultation, which closed in June 2017, heard strong support for the proposal to move to a more flexible approach to the assessment of English writing, and to do this quickly.
The Standards and Testing Agency (STA) also conducted an evaluation of the interim teacher assessment frameworks during spring 2017, working with teachers and other educational experts. In response, we have made changes to the frameworks for use in 2017 to 2018.

12. How do we prepare children?

Providing children with information to keep them informed and calm

13. How can you prepare your child?
Supporting your child with homework or any additional tasks that come home
Keeping in regular contact with school about ways to specifically support your child, PCP’s etc.
During the testing week
Ensure your child has a good nights sleep and breakfast every day
Talk to them to reassure them and keep them calm and focussed
