If you asked a child in the 1800s what they knew about places in other parts of the world, they probably wouldn’t know much. Today, children are more aware of the world because: we see maps, satellite images from space, photos and news coverage of remote places in different parts of the world we use the internet to research places for school projects we have social media and online gaming friends who live other parts of the world the goods we use and the food we eat come from many different places we travel.
12
How do people’s connections to places affect their opinion of them?
People who are more connected with places through things like travel and the media are more aware of places. People who are more aware of places have different opinions than people who don’t know anything about them. Example: Opinions of Australia based on connections The opinion of a child in England in 2014 … … is that Australia is a beautiful place with a wonderful climate and you would be lucky to be able to go there. The opinion of a child in England in the 1800s … … was that Australia was a barren and unwelcoming place and it was a punishment to be sent there.
