2 Primary and Secondary Data
Primary data is data that you collect; while Secondary data is data collected from external sources such as the internet, television, radio, newspapers, magazines, journals, research papers, reviews or by hearsay. It is usually in the form of a ready-made product, so averages, conclusions, etc. are already calculated and stated. Why would secondary data be used in preference to primary data?

3 Collecting Data A sample collects data from a representative group of the population. It is important for the sample to be unbiased (that is, not leaning towards one side of the issue). A census collects data from the entire target population. Random selection ensures all subjects have an equal chance of inclusion in the sample. Random samples can be obtained by: 1. using a computer program which selects randomly 2. using a table of random numbers (after assigning each person a number) 3. drawing a name out of a hat 4. using an alphabetical listing, selecting names at regular intervals

4 Census or Sample? 5 Categorical Data This kind of data involves things that go into categories and not numbers. It is also referred to as nominal data. Some examples are hair colour (brown, black, red, blonde etc), car brand (holden, ford, mazda, toyota etc) and favourite sport (cricket, rugby league, soccer etc). Ratings scales (like 1=love, 2=neutral, 3=dislike) are also examples of categorical data.

6 Numerical Data This is data which takes numerical values. It can be discrete (whole numbers only) or continuous (can take any values). Examples might be shoe sizes (discrete ) or height of seedlings (continuous).

9 Bias Bias occurs when a sample is more likely to give one answer than another – like asking football fans at a match what their favourite football team is. Suggest the possible bias in each of the following samples. a people surveyed by phone during the day b people surveyed at a train station c people selected from year 7 in a school if you want to know about the WHOLE school d ten people tested with a new drug

10 Explain and discuss any possible bias in the following samples.

12 These questions have been suggested for use in a survey about school uniforms. Comment on their appropriateness and possible responses. These questions have been suggested for use in a survey of what people watch on TV. Comment on their appropriateness and possible responses. 14 Frequency Distribution Tables
(Top left corner of your foldable) A frequency distribution table is a table that displays the frequency for each score. Tally marks are used to help record the data in the table, crossing every fifth one to make counting easier. The frequency of a score is the number of tally marks for that score. To create a dot plot: Find the highest and lowest scores to construct a scale. Space the dots evenly above the scores. Each dot represents a score. MUST have labelled axes and a heading History Quiz Scores

To construct a sector graph (also sometimes called a pie graph) we use the fact that the centre angle in a circle is 3600. Find each item as a fraction of the whole population, then find that fraction of 3600. Time spent by year 7 students online

28 Divided Bar Graphs (second position down, right side of foldable)
Divided bar graphs are constructed in the same way as sector graphs, using a bar instead of a circle. In a survey, 50 salespeople were asked the country of manufacture of their car. The results are given in the table.

A line graph is like a column graph. Both axes are labelled and drawn to scale.

Each data point is broken down into a “stem” and a “leaf.” First, “stems” are aligned in a column. Then, “leaves” are attached to the stems.
