Commentators often speak of 9/11 as a day that changed the world forever. This means that everyone’s life was somehow impacted by the event. Are there ways that you can point to in which your life was changed?
In the video, Dr. Paula Madrid says: “The main purpose of terrorism is to terrorize people and that’s exactly what happened to really frightened people for the long term.” Ultimately, however, terrorist attacks have a specific purpose.

1970s; Afghan government was fighting a battle against rebel groups that supported an extreme interpretation of Muslim scriptures and traditions
Afghan government appealed to Soviet Union for support (during the Cold War)
The US decided to support the rebel groups; one led by Osama bin Laden
Rebels eventually pushed the Soviets out of the country which led the Taliban to take over the country
this led to the formation of al Qaeda – vowed the fight Western influences in the Middle East

Taliban government refused to reveal bin Laden’s hiding place.
In October 2001, the UN agreed that the US and its allies had the right (as a matter of self-defence) to invade Afghanistan and track down bin Laden and oust the Taliban.
With UN approval, NATO took on the job of leading the invasion force.
Jean Chretien (PM) announced that Canada would join NATO
In 2004, the first democratic elections were held. The Taliban had been removed from power, but forces continue to attack

21. The War on Iraq
The US and UK decided to add a focus on Iraq, where they believed Saddam Hussein was amassing weapons of mass destruction (nuclear, chemical)
March 2003, 300,000 soldiers from the US, Britain and coalition nations invaded Iraq
Purpose was to depose Saddam Hussein and safeguard international security by destroying any WMDs
UN inspectors found NO WMDs and did not support the invasion of Iraq.
Canada refused to join the US and Britain.
Saddam Hussein captured and executed

April 2009 – only Canadian being held at the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba
Accused of killing a US army medic during a firefight in Afghanistan in July 2002, he has never stood trial
Captured by US forces
He was 15 at the time; Canadians, Human Rights Watch, and Amnesty International have argued that he was a child soldier.
Fought through the courts to have him returned to Canada – September 2012
