Opening Questions How do you define the term ‘civil rights’?
Give an example to illustrate your definition How do you define the term ‘social justice’?
5
Merriam-Webster Definitions
Definition of Social Justice 1: a belief in human equality especially with respect to social, political, and economic affairs 2: a social philosophy advocating the removal of inequalities among people Definition of civil rights : the nonpolitical rights of a citizen; especially : the rights of personal liberty guaranteed to U.S. citizens by the 13th and 14th amendments to the Constitution and by acts of Congress
6
Group Work Intro Today, you will be role-playing as a leader for a social justice movement. You will, in groups of roughly 4 students, do the following IN ORDER: Identify a specific social justice cause (either from Period 8 or 9) that you will be representing. Articulate 3-5 specific goals you would wish to achieve as a movement. For this set of goals, establish criteria through which you could decide if the movement had been successful in achieving these goals or not (you can decide what format this criteria takes) For each goal, come up with 2-3 strategies you would pursue in order to achieve that goal.
7
Group Work Share For each other person in your new group, I would like you to come up with 3 thought provoking questions or suggestions regarding their responses to yesterday’s questions ( I will time this). Once everyone has shared their plans and everyone has critiqued/questioned, I would like you to write down what common characteristics and common criticisms existed for each of the three parts of the group decisions Goals Criteria Strategies
8
Concluding Question What criteria would you create to help decide whether or not to devote your life to advancing one of these causes?

Beginning of “modern” Civil Rights Movement

Review Questions What events, people, and groups do you recall that were involved in advancing civil rights prior to WWII? What events, people, and groups are you aware of from the civil rights movement in the 1950’s-1960’s?
11
Brown v. Board of Education (1954)
Class-action lawsuit by 13 parents against racially segregated schools Technically Oliver Brown et al. v. The Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas Represented by lawyers from the NAACP The Supreme Court voted 9-0 to side with Brown Overturned the District Court’s ruling Overturned the doctrine of “separate but equal” from Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) Legal segregation was ruled a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment
12
Key figures Thurgood Marshall NAACP Lawyer Earl Warren
Later an Associate Justice of SCOTUS, Earl Warren Chief Justice of SCOTUS
13
Legacy of Brown The ruling was used as precedent in many future civil rights cases Inspired local activism and judicial activism within the civil rights movement Began the (long and unfinished) process of public school desegregation Brown II, the following year (1955) was ruled upon in order to specify that desegregation must occur at “all deliberate speed”
14
The lynching of Emmett Till (1955)
Throughout the 1950’s and previous decades, there were countless acts of brutality committed against African- Americans. What made this event stand out and become a launching point for the civil rights movement?
15
How did Till’s Story become so famous?
Description of the event: “He had been shot above the right ear, an eye was dislodged from the socket, there was evidence that he had been beaten on the back and the hips, and his body weighted by the fan blade, which was fastened around his neck with barbed wire.” His mother decided to have an open casket funeral Held in Chicago, where Till was from, rather than Mississippi Images of his body were printed in the Chicago Defender and Jet magazine along with the story

Montgomery Bus Boycott
Key Question: Why was the Montgomery Bus Boycott successful? For Documents A-E, identify reasons for the movement’s success that can be found in the document. Cite specific evidence. After reading all of the documents, identify what you believe to be the strongest reason for the movements success, and find at least 3 pieces of evidence supporting that claim.
18
“Short Answer” Practice (use timeline)
Identify 3 events that can be considered as a starting point for the modern civil rights movement in the U.S. Of the examples you selected, which do you believe is the most significant in garnering support for the civil rights movement? Why do you believe that event served as the most significant factor in launching the modern civil rights movement?
