1 The Courts begin to dismantle segregation
Well… just under 100 years after the civil war, we start to do something else about African American rights

2 Early decisions make big strides
1935- University of Maryland was ordered to admit a black student 1948- Shelley v. Kraemer- states were not allowed to enforce restrictive covenants… aka couldn’t say you can’t live here because of skin color 1950- began to attack segregation in education

3 Brown v. Board of Education… the start
All started with a little 7 year old girl Linda Brown 12 other parents joined to fight the Topeka, Kansas school board NAACP jumped in to help out and when the local court ruled in favor of the school board… they took it to the supreme court

5 Brown v Board Was a series of cases from Kansas, SC, Virginia, Delaware, and DC Became a class action lawsuit The NAACP’s lead attorney, Thurgood Marshall Showed the Dall test in court… take a look BTW, became a supreme court justice from … the first African American EVER!

6 The Doll Experiment

7 Took some time, but worked
Took 1.5 years to render a verdict, because the new chief justice Earl Warren, wanted a unanimous decision for brown… finally may 17th, 1954… they announced their decision One of the most judicial decisions in the nation’s history

8 Gave em’ time to comply Supreme court issued a second ruling that states begin to desegregation with “all deliberate speed.” what is that??? Some fought it, like Mississippi, but all eventually had to comply
