Making a Science Initiative Systemic, Successful, and Sustainable
California Mathematics and Science partnership (camsp) learning network meeting Sacramento, california april 4-5, 2011 California Mathematics and Science Partnership –Partners for Outstanding Science Education (CaMSP-POSE) Jarred Shell, MS.Ed., Rick Hall, Ed.S., Paul Gale, Ph.D., Linda Braatz-Brown, MS.Ed.
2
Why our partnership works
Relationships built over time Mutual respect: a value for each area of expertise Shared and focused workload Equal voices leading toward success with a student focus Based on building teacher capacity Synergist Partnership
3
Program Goals 1st To improve achievement in Science for students in 4th – 8th grades. 2nd To immerse teachers in on-going professional development. 3rd To strengthen and build capacity of Institutions of Higher Education (IHE) professors and the Ontario-Montclair Elementary School District (OMSD) community to fulfill integrated instruction and content needs in the field of science. 4th To increase the depth of science knowledge for teachers. 5th To build and support partnerships between OMSD and its parent community, San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools (SBCSS), Alliance for Education, University of California—Riverside (UCR), and local businesses.

Evaluation – The ethics
Evaluation and evaluator guidance Guiding Principals for Evaluators Joint Committee on Standards for Educational Evaluation Program Evaluation Standards Personnel Evaluation Standards Student Evaluation Standards Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing Education Testing Service: Standards for Quality and Fairness
11
Evaluation – an Art… Challenges to create and maintain an ethical evaluation Utility Propriety Feasibility Accuracy Flexibility Identifying key elements Constructing strategically Forcing a “flawed” design Assuming the design will change Navigation Policies Politics Personalities Collaboration Building shared concepts Creating viable models Steering the course of the program Information Comprehensive Strategic
12
…And – a science Hard science (Technical)
Multi-level evaluation designs Assessments Research Understanding the system (examples) Initiative design Partners as change agents Competitive and cooperative initiatives Soft research (Investigative) Supporting / piloting new ideas Allowing stakeholder learning Building relationships Continually developing the program through collaboration, discussions, and information Leveraging Resources Building participant capacity Collecting data for opportunity
13
Evaluation – a few Focuses
Assessments – outcomes “student” California Standards Tests District Benchmarks CaMSP Assessments Science Fair Projects Assessments – process “in situ” Summer Academy Content seminars Field excursions Classrooms Community
