- Moors - treeless, windy highland area Scotland – lochs - long, narrow bay with mountains on either side Climate – mild, rainy, foggy due to sea

Industrial Revolution- “Age of Inventions” 1800’s - was world’s leading economic power Leading natural resource is oil – North Sea Coal and natural gas #1 European oil producer Computers- “Age of Technology” – replace their once prominent textile, ships, cars, and machinery industry

Economy (continued) Updating farming methods but still must import 1/3 of their food Not enough farmland – others produce cheaper Main crops include wheat, barley, potatoes Raise cattle, sheep – large dairy industry

400’s ’s- Anglo-Saxons, Normans settled English mainland became English 1500’s- England major power 1707- Scotland, England, Wales became UK By the mid1800’s the UK was world’s largest overseas empire 1900’s WWI and WWII weakens UK Countries became independent

People (continued) Gifts to the world- Shakespeare, Dickens- literature Center for literature, theater, and arts Population – 59 million Speak English, religion – Protestant London – first city to reach 1 million people – largest city in Europe Today 8 million people Crowded country - 90% live in cities/towns

Government Belong to the EU
Government is parliamentary democracy- voters elect representatives to lawmaking body Chosen leader is the prime minister Also a constitutional monarchy - government headed by monarch king or queen King or Queen hold no governmental power More of a figure head
