Introduction What’s your first image about the United Kingdom? Gentlemen? English Football? Tea time? Fish and chips? Most people think upper 4 things and other when they think about UK. Other things are Harry Potter, Cloudy weather, Beatles, etc.

Tea time - Introduced in 17th Century by trading with China - Be a main drink in the end of 19th Century British people enjoy tea time about 7 to 8 times in one day before Nowadays, they enjoy the tea, but not too much unlike the past. Kind of TEA TIME Early morning tea (Bed tea) Breakfast tea Elevenses tea Mid tea (Lunch tea) High tea After dinner tea Night tea etc.

→ Indian curry, Pizza Express in London Traditional food : Roasted beef, Fish & chips Enjoying meal with other people → Tea party, Pub, Dinner party Huge relationship with tea culture

Instead, they give big interests to their local football team.

Conservative dress is the norm for both men and women in British business culture where darker colors - (black, dark blue, charcoal grey) and heavier fabrics (wool) predominate. Additionally, Women wear either trousers or a skirt, But, Denim is not normally acceptable for professional business meetings. Senior managers like high quality and express their status These are generally accepted in many companies. - But, now days Dress code inevitably varies across industries. For example, in creative sectors, casual and relaxed dress code is common. - In additional, many other companies have Casual Friday, Casual Day or Dress-Down Friday

Usually, Gift giving means successful results of negotiations In these occasion, such gifts will be gold, silver or taste of the recipient Invited to dinner at your business colleagues, gift giving such as wine and small are possible But, red roses(which signify romantic and white lilies(which express grief for funerals) are avoided NO!!!!!!

8 2. Etiquettes in business 2-3. Appointment & Punctuality
It is really bad manner in British business to visit their company with no appointment. Most appointments are arranged around 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Commonly, lunch time is around 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Punctuality is important in business situation. You should arrive in appointed time. In some social event (e.g. business reception or dining), late about 15 minutes should be better than on time. Because of old transportation system, you should ready earlier than expected time.

British prefer ‘introduced’ by others than ‘introducing’ oneself. called ‘Third party introducing’ Men’s case : Shake their hands each other Women’s case : European greeting(Rubbing each other cheeks) Having caution when you call your business partner. Call their name before they permit you to call his or her name is a bad manner. ex) Mr. Randon Professor Make sure that your partner’s titles. ex) Mr. Ferguson Sir. Alex Ferguson

- Do not interfere with their personal space. - Do not put yourself in very close to another person. - Do not put your arm around someone’s shoulder. - Recognize that making some valuable connections may take longer than anticipated.

- Use euphemism (indirect speech) - Speak with restraint - Talk around the subject - Neutral tone of voice - Avoidance of confrontation - Reserved & unemotional

12 Summary - British culture has little distinctive characteristics in many kinds of parts. - Wear suitable clothes considering your business situation. - Gift giving is not usual part in British business, but if you want to give, avoid gift that makes misunderstanding - You should be punctual when you are in business appointment. - Make sure your business partner’s position and title, and do not make mistakes when you are calling or introducing them. - Be careful about individual space. Do not interfere with your business partners space physically. - Use indirect speech and keep polite voice tone.
