Modern concept of industry originated in northern England and southern Scotland in mid 1700s and occurred over time (not a instantaneous revolution) IR was a series of improvements that transformed the process of manufacturing goods Was way more than industrial; new social, economic, political inventions as well Major industries impacted early on by the IR: Iron – Watt’s steam engine Coal – principal source of energy that replaced wood Transportation – canals and railroads Textiles – from cottage industry to factory Chemicals – bleaching and dyeing cloth Food processing - canning
