Do Now: If you were Kamehameha, and you had just unified the Hawaiian Islands, what are some steps that you would take to make your new nation a successful one?

Do Now: War often causes destruction. What are some actions that might need to be taken in the wake of (directly after) a war?

Rebuilding Resources After conquering the Hawaiian Islands and unifying them, Kamehameha had created considerable destruction to the islands, especially ahupua’as. Today you will about learn 4 of the resources that needed to be rebuilt.

Terraced Hills -Terraced hills are like ledges.
-Decrease errosion and surface runoff. -Allows you to farm on hilly land.

Taro Patches Used ponds as patches for taro, called lo’i.
Staple food for Hawaiians, was necessary for a successful kingdom. Equivalent to our rice and potatoes.

Irrigation Ditches Irrigation means the artificial application of water to land or soil. Used to supply dry areas with water. Increases agricultural production.

Fish Ponds Walls constructed from lava boulders.
Keeps fish inside while allowing the sea water to flow in and out. Only Royal Hawaiian chiefs could eat fish from these ponds.

Activity You will create a foldable.
On the front flaps, you will be writing the resources Kamehameha rebuilt and why he decided to make these decisions. On the back of the flap, use your brain to figure out what the consequences would’ve been if Kamehameha hadn’t rebuilt these items. Find directions here!
