Edgar Allan Poe was born
1809 Edgar Allan Poe was born His father David Poe Jr. died 1810 His mother Elizabeth Hopkins Poe died. Edgar was taken into the home of a Richmond merchant John Allan. 1811 He attended Manor School at Stoke Newington. He wrote several poems when he was a student. Later it becomes the setting for his story 'William Wilson'.

Poe attended the University of Virginia, but was expelled for not paying his gambling debts. Poe composed some tales, but little is known of his apprentice works. Poe joined the U.S. Army as a common soldier under assumed name, Edgar A. Perry. He was promoted in the US army and got the position of Master Sergeant. Poe entered West Point. He was dishonorably discharged next year, for intentional neglect of his duties 1830 Poe lived in Baltimore with his father's sister Mrs. Maria Clemm and taught his sister. When he won a contest with his story “Ms. Found in a Bottle”, he got a job as an editor with the Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond.

With his family he set out to try luck in New York and Philadelphia. 1837 1842 Virginia busted a blood vessel and died 1849 Poe died at the age of 40 in Baltimore. The cause of his death is undetermined.

Literary Style Poe’s best known fiction works are Gothic.
His most recurring themes deal with questions of death. Many of his works are generally considered part of the dark romanticism genre. Poe also wrote satires, humor tales, and hoaxes.

Influence He spawned many imitators.
His work laid the groundwork for future detectives in literature. He spawned many imitators. Poe and his work appear throughout popular culture in literature, music, films, and television. A number of his homes are dedicated museums today. The Mystery Writers of America present an annual award known as the Edgar Award for distinguished work in the mystery genre.
