3 Objectives Analyze a work fiction and determine the symbolic meaning of objects within the story. Construct a physical project with a symbolic meaning. Homework: Have a good Weekend.

4 Warm Up – Remember from earlier in the week…
In 3-4 sentences, construct a setting that informs the reader about: The type of people or things present on the land. The type of culture present in the story The type of conflict in the story

6 Get into your 4 person groups
Just like your passage packets, we will be discussing the LotF. Take out your books and remove everything else from your desk. In your groups, discuss each annotation objective on the next slide. Focus on the symbolic meaning present in the book. See you if can find the exposition and the rising action. Share your interpretations.

7 Chapter Three: Huts on the Beach
Pages 48-49 Jack is physically described and compared a number of times to different things. Highlight each detail and compose summaries in the margins. Examine the progression of the comparisons. Compose a sentence which explains what Golding is suggesting by these descriptions and comparisons. Highlight any detail and image which describes how the forest responds to Jack. Offer your interpretations in the margins. Pages 55-57 Like Jack, Simon spends time in the forest alone. Annotate all physical descriptions and actions of Simon. Highlight details and imagery which describe how the forest responds to Simon. At the end of the chapter, use post-its to compare Jack’s experience in the forest to Simon’s experience.

8 Chapter Four: Painted Faces and Long Hair
On page 59, highlight details that summarize what life is like on the island for the littluns. Briefly list the details in the margins. On page 63-64, Jack and the choir put on “masks,” which are often used as symbols. Highlight details and images that help to contribute to the symbolic representation of the masks. Compose a sentence which explains what you think the “masks” represent.  On pages 74-75, Jack and the choir boys reenact the pig hunt. Highlight significant details from this passage. At the end of the chapter, compose a statement which analyzes the significance and implications of this scene.

9 Lord of the Flies notes You should read approximately 10 pages a night to keep up. You will be allowed to use your book on the quiz to jog your memory. Thursday’s quiz will be comprehension based. On Thursday and Friday you will work in your groups to complete the close reading objectives. After the discussion on Friday you will have a quiz in which you will analyze your interpretation on the literary elements.

Take out your laptops and click on the link. You must answer the prompt and follow the constructed response format. You must have at least two quotes from the novel that support what you are trying to say (cited). Turn in your doc to turnitin.com

13 Prompt: At this point in the novel, the group of boys has lived on the island for some time, and their society increasingly resembles a political state.  Two conceptions of power emerge on the island, corresponding to the novel's philosophical poles - civilization and state of nature(savagery).  Discuss the characters of Ralph and Jack.   What political ideologies do these different characters represent?  Be sure to back up your claims with two items of evidence from the text.  (Constructed Response Format)

17 WHAT IS A SYMBOL? Raise your hand and give me an example of a symbol.
What do they all have in common? How would you define what a symbol is?

18 SYMBOL DEFINITION: an object, person, situation, action, or some other element in the story that has a literal meaning but suggest or represents other meanings as well.

Take out a piece of paper and write a sentence explaining the role setting plays in the story. What is the setting a symbol for? Who are the interlopers? Use textual evidence. Do they symbolize anything? Why did the author choose to make these things the interlopers? What message is present in the story?

The message can be: Don’t hang onto issues. Don’t let the past rule your future. Bury the hatchet. Don’t create more problems for yourself. Physical possessions are not worth your life.

28 Coat of Arms Project Take a piece of white paper and draw a shield.
Draw 3 symbols that represent you and your life goals. At the bottom of the shield, write a family motto. This can be a sentence that describes you or your beliefs. On the back, List and label each of your symbols and their meaning. Make sure you write your name on the back.
