Today, we’re going to read our second short story of the unit. It’s called “The Cask of Amontillado”, and it was written by Edgar Allan Poe, one of the most famous horror authors of all time. To get a better sense of who Poe was, we’re going to watch a quick 3 minute video bio about his life. As we watch, write down five things you learn about him on your paper.

Listen as we read. Afterwards, we’re going to respond to some analysis questions and we’re going to hold a Socratic seminar over the questions tomorrow, so make sure you pay attention.

On your paper, respond to the questions on your handout. Tomorrow, we’re going to have a Socratic Seminar over your answers, and you’ll be expected to speak at least twice. Make sure your answers are thoughtful and complete to ensure you can get the best possible grade.

Socratic Seminar Requirements
Expected to speak at least twice: Both comments need an explanation. For example, don’t just say, “I don’t think the narrator is reliable.” Tell us why. Be sure to be prepared to speak in response to more than just two questions, in case someone’s answer is very similar to yours. If you have the same answer, that’s okay, but make sure you have different textual evidence to support it. If you speak more than once, your BEST comments will be graded.
