1
Earth, Moon, and Sun
2
The Sun The Sun is a burning ball of gas.
The Sun gives the Earth HEAT and LIGHT. It provides ENERGY for the Earth.
3
The Sun is the CENTER of our solar system. It DOES NOT MOVE.
All the planets REVOLVE around the Sun because of the Sun’s GRAVITY.
4
Characteristics of the Sun
The Sun has SUNSPOTS that are areas of the sun’s surface that are cooler than the rest of the sun. The Sun sometimes releases pockets of gas called SOLAR FLARES.
5
The Moon The Moon is made of ROCK.
It has MOUNTAINS, PLAINS, ROCKS, INACTIVE VOLCANOES, and CRATERS!!
6
The Moon There is NO WATER on the moon.
There is NO ATMOSPHERE on the moon. Look! No atmosphere surrounding the moon!
7
No Atmosphere Because there is no atmosphere on the moon, the moon has no weather! Because the moon has no weather, the surface of the moon stays the same…there is no weathering, erosion, or deposition going on! There is no water, wind, or ice to cause it!! The footprint will remain on the moon FOREVER! There is no weathering to change it!!!
8
Does the Moon Have Gravity?
The Moon DOES have gravity BUT it is a lot less that the gravity the Earth has. The Moon has about 1/6th the amount of gravity on the Earth. So…If I go to the Moon, I will weigh 1/6th of what I weigh on the Earth!! Awesome! (If I weigh 120 lbs on Earth, I will weigh 20 lbs on the Moon!) If I bring a rock to the moon…what will change when I get to the moon? The MASS of the rock? The COLOR of the rock? The SHAPE of the rock? The WEIGHT of the rock?
9
The Earth The Earth is made of ROCK. We live on the outer part called the CRUST. Inside the Earth is so hot the rock melts. The mantle, outer core, and inner core are all melted rock. The Earth has WATER. Water is in the form of a solid (ice), liquid (water), or gas (water vapor).
10
Landforms and Gravity The Earth has many landforms like mountains, plains, hills, and valleys. Gravity on Earth pulls everything towards the center of the Earth. The Earth has MORE gravity than the moon! Sir Isaac Newton and the Universal Law of Gravitation
11
Atmosphere The Earth has less craters than the moon. Why??
The Earth has an atmosphere. The atmosphere protects our planet and gives us our weather! A crater in Arizona.
