2 Allegory – a device in which characters or events in a story represent or symbolize ideas and concepts. Example: Animal Farm is symbolic of the Russian Revolution 2. Metaphor – a comparison without using like or as. Example: My life is a dream. 3. Allusion – a figure of speech that makes a reference to people, literary works, myths, and/or works of art. Example: I was surprised his nose was not growing like Pinocchio’s. 4. Personification – giving non human objects human like characteristics. Example: The tree was whispering. Symbolism - using an object or a word to represent an idea. Example: The house that Min and Tian live in (from Hunger) is symbolic of the memories and unhappiness that they leave behind, which is why Anna cannot bring herself to sell the house in the end of the story.

Foreshadowing – when the author hints at what may happen next. Example: In Cask of Amontillado, Edgar Allan Poe hinted that someone may be murdered/killed. 9. Flashback - a scene that takes the narrative back in time. Example: In Thirteen Reasons Why, Clay has many flashbacks of his conversations with Hannah. 10. Simile – A comparison using like or as. Example: My life is like a dream.

Art Spiegelman is co-founder/editor of Raw, the acclaimed magazine of comics and graphics. His work has been published in the New York Times, Playboy, the Village Voice, and many other periodicals, and his drawings have been exhibited in museums and galleries here and abroad. Mr. Spiegelman lives in New York City with his wife, Francoise Mouly, and their daughter, Nadja.

Maus is a story within a story: Art Spiegelman, the son of two survivors of the Holocaust, tells how he interviewed his father Vladek about his Holocaust experience, and it tells the story of the father's persecution and survival. It is written in a comic book format, with various types of animals representing the various nationalities and religions (however, Jews are mice, no matter what nationality they are).
