Alex was suddenly aware that something had changed. It took him a few seconds to realize what it was and at once he felt the hairs on the back of his neck bristle and stand on end.
What he had taken to be a tiger-skin rug had just stood up.
It was a tiger, alive and angry.
A white Siberian tiger…..an animal that had, for centuries, inspired dread across three continents.

17. …excerpt from Wounded by Eric Walters
A gigantic ramp rolled toward the aircraft. Two soldiers rode on the ramp and it stopped right beside the plane and then started to rise up until it was level with the opening. I knew what was going to happen next and I held my breath waiting. Slowly, out of the opening appeared a coffin, draped in the red and white of a Canadian flag. The soldiers eased it out along rollers and on to the elevator ramp. Amidst the dark and drab colours, the red of the flag stood out brightly.
