1. Is there “maria” on the moon?
The dark areas on the moon are called maria The word maria is Latin for seas. Early astronomers thought the dark areas looked like seas or oceans. Actually, there are no water of any kind on the moon. Meteoroids hit the moon and made dents called craters. Then, volcanoes blew up and filled the dents with hot lava. The lava froze and became rock. The pink maria below is called the Sea of Tranquillity. This is where our astronauts first landed-and walked on the moon!
