2 Join or Die Benjamin Franklin May 9, 1754

3 The French and Indian War
The Myth Behind the Snake At the time, colonists and Europeans believed a severed snake could rejoin within a day if laid close enough together. They confused regenerative lizard tails for snakes. Franklin created the “Join or Die” carving in attempt to bring the colonies together to fight off the French and Native American opposition. Each colony was suspicious of the other and did not want to join together. Loss to the French would mean a loss of superiority for Britain.

4 The American Revolution
Franklin’s political cartoon took on a slightly different meaning during the American Revolution. After Britain financed the rest of the French and Indian War, they wanted their money back from the colonists. The colonists did NOT agree.

5 Distancing Relationship
The 3,000 mile separation between Britain and North America created a new identity for the immigrants of North America. Not everyone living in the colonies were English; they were German, Dutch, Swedish, Jewish, Scots-Irish, and French. The British thought that this “open rebellion” was unjustifiable and that the colonists had no reason to turn against their mother country.

6 Peace Offer Colonists pledged their loyalty to Great Britain by sending the Olive Branch Petition to King George III in The rejection of this peace request led many American colonists, who only wanted to secure their rights, to desire complete independence. Colonists were willing to do anything to keep their rights, and in the end, they realized that they would have to unite and separate from Great Britain in order to be free.
