28.2 Ionian Revolt 1. Why did the Ionians revolt? Persian took their farmland and harbors Forced to pay tribute (tax) and serve in the army 2. What happened? Persians destroyed the city-state of Miletus May have sold Ionians to slavery; punished the Ionians. Athenians left the Ionians to fight for themselves. Ionians lost to the Persians.

Athenian soldiers defeated the Persians. Sparta didn’t send troops because they were celebrating a religious festival. “We’ll help you after the next full moon!” 2. Why important? Showed the Persian army could be defeated

28.6 & 7 Battle of Plataea 1. What happened at the Battle of Plataea? Greeks defeated the Persian army that Xerxes had left behind. 2. Why were the Persian wars important? Preserved Greek independence Prevented Persia from conquering all of Europe
