Microorganisms Review

2
Bacteria Classified by shape Single Celled
Found in three different shapes Spherical Rod twisted
3
Bacteria Live Everywhere! Both good and bad!
Bad bacteria are called pathogens. Some harmful pathogenic bacteria include: Strep throat Salmonella
4
Bacteria Bacteria need food and water to survive.
You can slow down the growth of bacteria by refrigerating your food. Notice the flagella and cilia (movement) Bacteria are everywhere. Most bacteria are useful like those used in the production of yogurt, cheese and sourdough bread, but some are very harmful. These harmful bacteria are called pathogenic bacteria; that is they make people sick. By far, of all microorganisms bacteria are the biggest concern contributing to most foodborne illness cases. Most bacteria are controlled by storing, cooking, and cooling food properly.
5
Fungi Microscopic and can be seen with the naked eye.
Grow where it is cool and shady. Fungi are lager than bacteria under a microscope. Pathogenic Fungi: Athletes Foot Ringworm
6
What is Fungi good for? Fungi can be good to eat, like some mushrooms or foods made from yeast, like bread. Molds from fungi are used to make cheeses. Penicillin, perhaps the most famous of all antibiotic drugs, is derived from a common fungus called Penicillium. Many other fungi also produce antibiotic substances, which are now widely used to control diseases in human and animal populations. The discovery of antibiotics revolutionized health care worldwide.

Protists One way protists can be divided up is according to how they move. Cilia - Some protists use microscopic hair called cilia to move. These tiny hairs can flap together to help the organism move through water or other liquid. Flagella - Other protists have a long tail called flagella. This tail can move back and forth helping to propel the organism. Pseudopodia - This is when the protist extends part of its cell body to scoot or ooze along. Amoebas use this method to move. Giardia is a protist that can make you very sick.
8
Protists Chlorophyll makes plant-like protozoans green.
Most protists live in water.
9
Viruses Aren’t living organisms, they need a host to survive.
Influenza (flu) is a common virus.
10
Decomposers Fungi and bacteria play an important role in nature. They break down the unused dead material and turn them into nutrients in the soil, which plants use to grow. They are an important part of the food chain.
11
Pasteurization Process of the food industry that uses heat to kill harmful bacteria.

Question If I had the flu, would a doctor prescribe and antibiotic?
Answer If I had the flu, would a doctor prescribe and antibiotic? No! Antibiotics kill bacteria. The flu is caused by a virus.
