Congress debated over what titles the heads of government should have Washington ended debate saying call him “Mr. President” Executive Branch: Department of State – relations with other countries Department of War – defend the nation Treasury Department – oversee finances

Excise tax – tax on production or sale of product Turned wheat into whiskey to save money on shipping “Whiskey Boys” - tarred and feathered tax collectors

French Revolution – wanted what America had, won and became a republic After supporters began beheading wealthy families Wealthy Americans scared same would happen here

Warned about the damage to the new nation if political parties could not control fighting Established up and running new government and added three states Kentucky, Tennessee, and Vermont Left the nation united and at peace

Felt people were selfish, believe this made people not trust the government Favored strong government Country comes first before the states

Ideal Economy Need to pay off debt from Revolutionary War
To get South to help pay off debt, promised the nations capital to be in the south, District of Columbia Establish national bank – collect taxes and keep money safe, print money, give loans to businesses

Political parties became more important in the election process Republicans picked Thomas Jefferson Federalists supported John Adams John Adams won by 3 votes and Jefferson became his VP

Alien and Sedition Acts
Made to protect the country from troublemakers: Lengthened the time for immigrants to become citizens able to vote from 5 to 14 years Put aliens in jail for stirring up trouble Deport aliens who caused trouble Encouraging rebellion against the government now became a crime Republicans felt these acts were used to make their lives difficult

Election of 1800 Thomas Jefferson was backed by the Republican Party, VP Aaron Burr John Adams was chosen to run again for the Federalist Party, VP Charles Pickney A tie occurred between Burr and Jefferson because votes were given to both Tie sent to House of Reps and voted for Jefferson and he was elected president 12th Amendment added to prevent ties Electoral college casts separate ballots for President and VP
