1 Energy Transfer in the Climate System
Grade 9 and 10 Science Mr. MacMillan Energy Transfer in the Climate System

2 The Earth’s climate is a complex system
A system is a group of interdependent parts that work together to form a single, functioning whole

3 Positive Feedback Feedback loop
A process in which part of a systems output is returned or fed back into the input Positive loop – increases effects of interacting parts

4 Negative Feedback Helps maintains a systems equilibrium

5 Heating on the Planet On a sunny day when you can feel the sunlight warm your skin. This sunlight is responsible for the feedback loops in Earth’s climate system Electromagnetic radiation Energy that travels in waves that move outward in all directions from a source

6

7 Types of Energy Transfer
Radiation Radiation is the transfer of energy, including thermal energy, as electromagnetic radiation. All matter radiates some thermal energy

8

9 Conduction Conduction is the transfer of thermal energy between two objects that are in direct physical contact. Example: stove top to frying pan

10

11 Convection Convection is the transfer of thermal energy by highly energized molecules moving from one place to another.

14 Visualizing El Nino and La Nina
Pick either El Nino or La Nina and answer the following questions: Summarizes what happens during the event Draw a diagram explaining how the event occurs In what areas is it most likely to occur.
