Energy Energy - The ability to do work
2
ENERGY Kinetic Energy - energy of motion
Potential Energy - stored energy - position or structure
3
ENERGY Types of Energy Chemical

ENERGY Types of Energy Electrical
5
ENERGY Types of Energy Mechanical
6
ENERGY Types of Energy Light Heat
7
Energy Conversions Energy can be converted from one type to another:
Here we see chemical energy (the battery) being converted to mechanical energy (the fan).
8
Thermodynamics Thermodynamics is the study of the flow of energy throughout an ecosystem. There are two laws of Thermodynamics that we will study
9
First Law of Thermodynamics
Energy can be transferred and transformed, but it can neither be created nor destroyed. That is: the amount of energy in a system remains the same.
10
Amount of energy in the system remains the same
11
Second Law of Thermodynamics
Every energy transfer or transformation increases the entropy of the universe. Entropy - random, useless energy, can not do work, eg. “Heat”.
12
Metabolism Metabolism refers to all of the chemical reactions that take place inside our cell. An anabolic reaction is a reaction that builds macromolecules from simpler molecules. A catabolic reaction is a reaction that breaks apart macromolecules into simpler molecules.
13
Energy Reactions Exothermic reactions Endothermic reactions
