Lesson 13: Air/ Atmosphere Vocabulary
- How we impact the atmosphere, air, and environment - Review the vocabulary to the class global warming greenhouse effect Vocabulary
2
Industries POLLUTION CAUSE
- Explain how factories and industries cause pollution - Briefly explain how pollution gets into the air and cause acid rain - Explain that some countries don’t see pollution as a major problem back then.. for example, China. It was recently, that China cared more about their problems with pollution - Explain how most factories and industries produce toxic pollution - Pollution is a benefactor to global warming - Many people are now noticing the effects of pollution
3
Transportation Cars! Buses! Trains! Airplanes! Causes: Effects:
- population increases in urban areas - transportation also increases - rural places are far away from urban places and the city Effects: - increases of pollution because more cars are being used - pollution increases as transportation increases - vehicles produce emissions that is harmful to the environment and ozone - global warming increases - Discuss with the students how they get to school and if they have traveled anywhere lately. - Explain how all transportation has pros and cons - Explain the causes and effects of transportation - Elaborate how some of the transportation can be ecofriendly like hybrid cars or riding bicycles
4
Solutions Can you think of other solutions?
- Tell the students there are many possible solutions! - Two of the solutions are walking, and biking to the places you want to be. - Have them split up into groups and discuss about other solutions to be green Can you think of other solutions?
5
Ask the students what is the difference between the right side and the left side.
- explain that the left side is due to global warming and this is the outcome of it - the right side may present as right now or what we can strive towards instead of the left side What do you see?
6
Global Warming - Explain what is global warming and tell them about the effects of global warming - Interpret the graph on the left and tell them where global warming goes - Explain how carbon emission is rapidly rising through the years as the graph on the right shows
7
VIDEO! (Pollution) Video: Bill Nye The Science Guy - Pollution Solutions Link: Start Time: 4:06 End Time: 5:20 Have the students answer the questions while watching this video.
8
Lesson 14: Agriculture/Land
-Talk about human population -Review vocabulary Deforestation Urbanization Agriculture Vocabulary
9
Where do you live?
10
City Country Urbanization
Increasing in size, number of people, land area Less people living here -Explain increased movement of human population towards cities -More land being cleared for cities and suburbs
11
Removal of trees from a forest so the land can be used
Destruction of habitats -land cleared for urbanization Methods: Clear-Cut Slash and Burn Effects: Extinction Global warming
12
Agriculture Increase in agriculture, better farming methods
Need more food -Terrace farming helps prevent loss of water Increase in agriculture, better farming methods Large Population
13
Lesson 15 : Protecting the Environment
14
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Things to recycle Plastic - Bottles, packaging
Paper - sheet paper, cardboard Metal - aluminum cans, wiring Glass - bottles -Teach students that the best thing to do is reduce first if possible, then reuse, then recycling is the last step
15
Alternative Travel -Students can tell parents or other adults who drive -Instead of driving cars, ride bikes, walk, or use public transportation
16
Video!
17
Outer Space Satellites Garbage Too much space junk!
-many satellites not even in use -garbage jettisoned out into space Garbage
18
Environmental Tips -Turn off lights when not in room
-Save water wherever necessary, like while brushing teeth or shampooing in the shower -Recycle plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and glass bottles in recycling bins; have a recycling bin in your house -Print double sided, keep scratch paper
