100 Colonists first came-most were rich men-most died off but more kept coming ***1609 Starving time “Gentlemen” colonists would not work themselves. Game in forests & fish in river uncaught. Settlers wasted time looking for gold instead of hunting or farming.

SOUTHERN COLONIES- SETTLED BY PEOPLE SEEKING ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES SUCH AS:
CAVALIERS-English nobility who received large land grants in Virginia from the King of England.Plantations. POOR ENGLISH,SCOTS,IRISH IMMIGRANTS- small farmers or artisans and settled in the Shenandoah Valley or western Virginia INDENTURED SERVANTS-(also came from the UK) worked on tobacco plantations for a period of time to work off passage. Usually 5-7 years.

** SLAVERY Some Africans worked as indentured servants and earned their freedom. The first Africans were brought against their will to Jamestown in 1619 to work on tobacco plantations and over time larger and larger numbers of enslaved Africans were forcibly brought to the Southern Colonies.

PLANTATION OWNERS RULED. Virginia social structure based on status and ownership of land. Maintained an allegiance to the Church of England (Anglican) Closer social ties to Britain than did those in the other colonies.
