Joomla is an award-winning content management system (CMS), which enables you to build Web sites and powerful online applications.

On August 18, 2005, Andrew Eddie called for community input on suggested names for the project.
September 1, 2005 the new name, "Joomla!", was announced. It is the English spelling of the Arabic word jumla (جملة) meaning "all together" or "as a whole“.
