2 Group activity- WTI Body paragraph evaluation
Exchange drafts with one other student (3 students per group iff one person is missing their draft) Read through the draft and answer the questions below What is the student’s thesis? Take this directly from the text. How interesting is the student’s hook? Give it a rating of 1-5 for engagement. What kind of structure do the body paragraphs follow? (Consider: inverted pyramid, chronological, general to specific) How many pieces of direct evidence are included in the essay? Would you describe these as quotes or paraphrase (give a number and identification for each) Check the separation between each paragraph to evaluate the essay’s coherence (using the last sentence of one paragraph and the first sentence of the next paragraph). Does each have a smooth transition or use transition words?

Know the context Determine the author’s thesis or controlling idea Look up words or terminology you are not familiar with Annotate the text as you read (or take notes elsewhere) Read multiple times Make connections Ask questions!

6 Formality in writing General formal writing strategies
Make your writing clear, structured, and detailed Avoid 1st and 2nd person Use titles where appropriate Use complex and discipline specific language Avoid figurative language and idioms Edit thoroughly Use passive voice for maximum objectivity (particularly in research writing) Avoid absolutes/use qualifiers Avoid contractions (in very formal writing) Follow prescriptive grammar rules (covered in ENC1101)

8 homework WTI – Draft 2 300-500 words
Due Monday 11-6 (or by conference time if scheduled earlier) Should include your whole essay text along with multimodal elements and attention to document design and structure Bring a printed copy to class/conference and submit electronic copy to Turnitin.com
