Lyric Poetry a poem that expresses the thoughts and feelings of the poet. Lyric poetry does not tell a story. The lyric poet addresses the reader directly.

Types of Lyric Poetry and Sonnets
There are many forms of lyric poetry including… Odes and Sonnets

Odes long poems which are serious in nature and written to a set structure. They are dedicated to one theme to honor its subject, usually an important person or idea such as freedom.

Types of Sonnets The two major types: 1. English (or Shakespearean)
2. Italian (or Petrarchan) Both are named after the poets that made them famous

Characteristics of English Sonnet
Contains three quatrains and a concluding couplet Each quatrain makes a point or gives an example The couplet sums it all up

There are several types of narrative poetry including Ballads and Epics

Often about love and often sung A ballad is a story in poetic form

Epic Poems long, serious poems that tells the story of a heroic figure
Some of the most famous epic poems are The Iliad and The Odyssey by Homer
