Spelling can be fun, honestly!
Year 4 Word Study Spelling can be fun, honestly!

English in Year 4 1.Braids of English-explain that the exploration of spelling (orthography) is a way of strengthening and lengthening the Literacy braid. Children are using their understanding of language to make links between speaking, listening, reading and writing. It is not taught in isolation-rather as part of a more holistic programme of Literacy. Sometimes, we have discreet spelling sessions and at other times it is part of an English lesson. We call spelling Word Study as that is the approach we are using. 2.Brief overview of the spelling within the Mastery Curriculum-use the through the gate and digging for gold analogy. Much of the time, the children are working in mixed ability groupings and they often work collaboratively-talk for spelling, discussion based, refining ideas.

What Word Study isn’t! It is not about memorising words for a weekly spelling test and then forgetting them thereafter. It is not taught in isolation from Reading and Writing. Boring! A lot of research has shown that traditional weekly spelling lists have only limited value. Children can memorise a word for a test with little understanding of its meaning or how to apply their knowledge of how that word is spelt to help them spell other words with the same pattern e.g. rather than learning invention or injection for a test, they can explore ‘tion’ sufixes/endings and it will help them spell other words such as Intervention, inspection, action. They can investigate what all these words have in common i.e. the root word ends in e.g. invent, act, inspect. As we are sudying words and word patterns, the children are looking for them in their own reading and writing. They are becoming more word aware!

What is it then? Active, exciting learning
Based on a belief that most words do follow spelling patterns Deepening understanding of how words are built and then applying this knowledge in reading and spelling Comparing and contrasting words, sorting, manipulating them and classifying them By applying their learning to other words they will learn far more words that learning a selection of words for a weekly test. It links visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning. Approx 85% of words do follow a regular spelling pattern. The teaching sequence will incorporate different types of sorts such as the open sort we did with the names this morning, to closed sorts where the criteria is stated, blind sorts where the children work with a partner and read the word aloud for the other child to point out which group it will belong in.
