1 Year 10 Subject Selection Marine Science

2 Course Description This unit covers a variety of topics. These include: Chemistry - oceans, properties of sea water, currents and convection; Biology - coastal environments, aquatic flora and fauna; Physics - energy sources, wave theory and the wave machine; and Earth Science - structure and formation of continental shelves, rock ledges, beaches and sand dunes.

3 Why Study this? Work Tasks Assessment tasks
Work tasks include practical activities, chapter questions and classroom discussions on all topics covered in the unit. An example of some of the practical activities include: Properties of Seawater Effect of Oil on Sea Birds Fish and Prawn dissections Wave action on shorelines Practical Reports Assignments Topic Tests End of Semester Exam

4 Subject pathway…. Students who undertake this subject are given a general introduction to studying Marine Science. Disciplines of Science covered in course include: Biology, Physics and Chemistry. VCE pathway: Environmental Science. It is suggested that students who choose to undertake VCE Biology should also complete the year 10 Biology course.

5 Extra activities/costs?
An overnight camp to Merimbula allows students the opportunity to work with Scientists from the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre. Student undertake practical activities that may include a focus on the Oyster Farming Industry, Fish Anatomy (dissection) and Tube Worm Ecology. The approximate cost of this camp is $130.
