Characteristics: 1. quick glimpse 2. how light effects color 3. unposed 4. bright colors …5. no emotion, just painted what they saw

6 Vincent van Gogh Started out as a missionary in Belgium
Began painting and drawing when he failed as a missionary First colors used were browns and other drab colors At age 33, his brother Theo (an art dealer), paid to send him to art school and supported him. Theo was his patron Patron: a person who financially supports another person, cause or activity

While in Paris, van Gogh met Edgar Degas and the other Impressionists Their influence on him was immediate and dramatic Paintings began to blaze with color Adopted impressionists technique of using small, short brushstrokes to apply his paint 1885 1887
