Four classes of organic compounds: Carbohydrates Proteins Lipids
3.3 Molecules of Life pp Four classes of organic compounds: Carbohydrates Proteins Lipids Nucleic Acids
2
*Four classes of organic compounds: *Carbohydrates
3.3 Molecules of Life pp *Four classes of organic compounds: *Carbohydrates Carbon, hydrogen, & oxygen Sugars, starches *Store energy in muscle & liver *Monomer is monosaccharide *Polymer is polysaccharide In animals it is glycogen In plants it is starch or cellulose Can you name some carbohydrates? How many sugar molecules in a disaccharide? Saccharide = sugar

Monomer polymer
5
*Polymer is polypeptide
3.3 Molecules of Life pp 2. *Proteins C, O, H, N Skin, muscle, and enzymes *Structure of body, tools to do *specific jobs in body, and stores energy *Monomer is amino acid 20 different amino acids *Polymer is polypeptide Peptide bond is O=C-N-H Enzymes are proteins that do a specific *job determined by the SHAPE Can you name some proteins? What determines the job a protein does?
9
Long C & H chains that are *non-polar with a polar end containing O
3.3 Molecules of Life pp *Lipids Mostly C and H, little bit of O Fats, oils, steroids, hormones *Store energy (twice carbs or protein), *membranes, and signals between cells Long C & H chains that are *non-polar with a polar end containing O Polar end is hydrophilic = “water loving” Non-polar end is hydrophobic= “water hating” Monomer is fatty acid Polymer is fat molecule Explain how fat is good?
13
*Monomer = nucleotides, there are 5 of them *Polymer = DNA or RNA
3.3 Molecules of Life pp *Nucleic Acids Sugar plus Nitrogen base and phosphate group *DNA & RNA *Stores information (genetic code) *Monomer = nucleotides, there are 5 of them *Polymer = DNA or RNA DNA = deoxyribonucleic acid RNA = ribonucleic acid How are DNA and RNA different?
