5 What does the word “renaissance” mean?
It means “rebirth or revival.” It usually refers to the Renaissance that flourished in Europe between 1300 and Characterized by innovation, curiosity, and adventure from architecture, to science, to art. The Harlem renaissance was the rebirth of African American art/music/literature

8 What is the Great Migration?
The Great Migration was the movement of African Americans from the South to the North. They moved to find acceptance and avoid prejudice and discrimination. They also moved to find work. Southern agricultural jobs were in decline- Northern industrial jobs were increasing.

9 What two forms of music evolved from African American folk music?
Jazz and the blues

10 What does it mean to be “in vogue?”
It doesn’t mean you have your picture in the magazine. It means to be the prevailing popular fashion, practice, or style.

11 What was the Cotton Club?
It was one of the most famous night clubs in Harlem – reportedly run by the mafia/mob. African Americans performed there but it was a “Jim Crow” club – only white patrons!

12 What is a Jim Crow law? It basically segregates establishments into sections. Whites were allowed in one section, African Americans had to be in a separate section (or an entirely different place all together (like schools, restaurants, etc.)

13 What ended the Harlem Renaissance?
The 1930’s brings the Great Depression. Many people were struggling to survive and didn’t have the money, time, or energy to devote to the arts.
