Where it all began In 1867 four colonies of Britain decided they would get together and make a country They had to decide how to set up their government and who would do what

The B.N.A. Act This British law set up the Canadian government
It outlined what the federal, provincial and local governments would be responsible for

Federal Responsibilities
The Federal Government is responsible for issues that affect the entire country. These include money, defence, postal services, immigration, criminal law, Native peoples, foreign relations and communication

Provincial Responsibilities
The Provincial or Territorial governments take care of issues particular to a province or territory These include health and welfare, education, alcohol consumption, drivers’ licences, provincial highways, hospitals and natural resources

Municipal or Local Responsibilities
Provincial governments set up local governments for towns and cities Their responsibilities include fire departments, streets and roads, water and sewage, libraries, garbage collection and local transit

The Flexibility of Democracy
Since 1867 there have been many changes Federal, provincial and local governments try to work together to help Canadian with those changes Your taxes go to all three levels of government to help pay for the services they provide.
