GAME RULES 1. Make teams. Decide which team goes first. 2
GAME RULES Make teams. Decide which team goes first Appoint a scorekeeper Teams answer correctly and earn money. If a team is correct, they can continue until max. 3 times or until they get BAAM! If a team hits BAAM! they go bankrupt! The team with the most money at the end is the winner Penalties cost a team $10 , $25 and $50 dollars! They can and WILL be appointed for complaining!
3
Pick a Number! Don't get BAAMed!

An atom of Carbon-14 has ____ protons, _____ neutrons, and _____ electrons Carbon- 14 has …. 6, 8, 6 “14” is the mass number $ 20
9
Nothing!
10
The gold foil experiment was conducted by ______________ and he discovered______________ (name at least 2 of his discoveries based on the gold foil experiment) Conducted by Rutherford, he discovered that the atom had a small, positively charged nucleus. His experiment also showed that the atom was mostly empty space. He also discovered the proton. $10
11
A certain neutral atom X contains 54 electrons and 78 neutrons
A certain neutral atom X contains 54 electrons and 78 neutrons. Write the symbol (in isotopic form… A z X ) for this element. 132 Xe 54 $ 50
12
*** This would be extra credit
Write the formula for the compound formed by the combination of Na+ and S 2- Na2S $ 50
13
What side of the magnet (positive or negative) is pointed towards the cathode ray? What is a cathode ray (the green beam) composed of? Positive- because the cathode ray is composed of electrons which are negative. The negative electrons are attracted to the positive magnet. $ 10
14
Whose experiment is pictured below? What is this experiment called?
Rutherford’s Gold Foil Experiment $ 10
15
What is an alpha particle?
2 protons and 2 neutrons= double positive charge $ 10
16
Zip!
17
Write the notation for a particle with: 29 protons, 35 neutrons, 27 electrons
AZ X (charge) Cu 29 $ 10
18
Calculate the average atomic mass of Iridium in atomic mass units (amu). Isotope Mass (amu) % abundance Ir % Ir % 191 x = 193 x = = amu $ 50

Which of the following are incorrectly paired? a) Oxygen, non-metal b) Cl, halogen c) Ca, alkali metal d) Ne, noble gas e) Ni, transition metal C. Ca is an alkaline earth metal $ 10
21
Non-metals tend to _____________(gain or lose
Non-metals tend to _____________(gain or lose?) electrons and form _____________ (cations or anions?) Answer: Gain, Anions $ 20
22
Draw the model of the atom that came from JJ Thomson and William Thomson (Lord Kelvin) and label your model Draw the plum pudding model- positive sphere with negative electrons throughout $ 50
23
How many protons and neutrons and electrons are contained in the nucleus of the following atom:
24 12 Mg Protons = 12 , neutrons = 12, electrons = 0 ** electrons are not in the nucleus! $ 10
24
Which subatomic particle(s) contribute most to the atomic mass
Which subatomic particle(s) contribute most to the atomic mass? Which subatomic particle(s) determine the atom’s chemical properties? protons and neutrons account for the mass. electrons account for the chemical properties. $ 10
25
$ 5 Write the name/symbol for the following elements:
1) Mg _____________________ 2) K _____________________ 3) Bromine _____________________ 4) Iodine _____________________ 5)Ag _____________________ magnesium potassium Br I silver $ 5

27
$ 100 What is the most common isotope of fluorine? How do you know?
Fluorine- 19 because the average atomic mass on the periodic table is closest to 19. $ 100
28
You’re broke!
29
Elements to the left of the “stair step” on the periodic table can be classified as _________. Elements to the right of the “stair step” can be classified as _________. Most elements that border the “stair step" are known as the _________. metals, non-metals, metalloids $ 10
