DO NOW!!! KCcfwnU Periodic Table Song
2
Unit 3 Lesson 2
3
Elements Once believed - fire, wind, earth, & water – made up all matter - WRONG 3
4
1860s – scientists considered there to be around 60 basic elements
Many elements - similar properties Classification system was needed
6
Periodic Table Henry Moseley - reorganized Mendeleev’s periodic table - order of increasing number of protons - atomic number. 6
7
Periodic Table Patterns
Zigzag line - separates metals from nonmetals. Lanthanides & Actinides – Added to bottom in order to shorten the table
9
Periodic Table Patterns

DO NOW – Adopt an Element
Research on GOOGLE browser – Interactive Periodic Table – to find more information Grab a Chromebook: Go to one website listed above! Research an element your interested in. Fill out the Adopt an Element Worksheet Ca Calcium, Ti Titanium, U Uranium, C Carbon, O Oxygen, Ne Neon, H Hydrogen, Cl Chlorine, Na Sodium, Al Aluminum, Cu Copper, Mg, Magnesium
13
Periodic Table Game ctable_0_click_common.html Complete the Periodic Table Gossip Worksheet
14
HW Review Pages 172 – 173 and answer questions #8-9
15
DO NOW!!! Using your Periodic Table complete the Do Now Worksheet
16
Periodic Table Information
Each square contains: # of Protons & Neutrons in Nucleus of 1 atom # of Protons in Nucleus of 1 atom 16
17
Chemical Symbol Abbreviation for the element’s name.
First letter - always capitalized Any other letter - lowercase. Element name - written under chemical symbol. 17
18
Atomic Mass – Protons + Neutrons
All atoms of element - same # of protons / # of neutrons can vary (Isotopes) Average atomic mass - weighted average of the masses of all the naturally occurring isotopes of that element. Atomic mass units - (amu). 18
19
Metals, Non-metals, Metalloids
Zigzag Line- divides 3 major categories of elements Metals (left of zigzag) – shiny, conduct heat and electricity well Nonmetals (right of the zigzag) – dull, brittle, & poor conductors of heat and electricity Metalloids (border zigzag line) have properties of both metals and nonmetals 19
21
Group/family – atoms have similar # of valence electrons
Valence electrons - participate in chemical bonding.
22
Periods – Atom Size Elements in middle of a period - most dense.
Left to right within a period - atomic number of each element increases by 1.
23
HW Complete the Lesson Review on page 179.
24
Understanding Periodic Table Squares Lab
25
Periodic Table competition.
Break into 4 groups Using the poster as a reference Create the periodic table with your group.
26
Element Project
27
Create your own 3D mobile model of an Element
Sodium = 12 Neutrons, 11 Protons, 11 Electrons
28
Make a Mobile Model of an Element
Read the Worksheet together as a class! Pick a partner. Pick one of the elements. Research the elements protons, neutrons, and electron numbers along with the electron orbital configuration. Create your elements mobile.
