2. TEAM ASSIGNMENT #1 9/20/2018 MAE 4291: Senior Design 1
Review 4 prior senior design reports, comment on strength and weaknesses, and use these to develop your own final report outline
(1): Aerospike, (2) Slosh Analysis, (3) H.E.T.E, (4) FITSat IV
Each week review 1 report and then rotate to other teams
Summary 1 Due: August 25, Summary 2 Due: September 3, Summary 3 Due: September 8, Summary 4 Due: September 15
Final Report Outline (tailored specifically for your team) Due: September 22
Technical comments:
Does the project have a clear scope, goals, and objectives – are these articulated in an professional engineering and scientific context? Are there design requirements? Do they understand the difference between goals, objectives, requirements?
Is there a sufficient literature review which convinces you that the team knows an ample amount about the subject matter to make a meaningful new contribution?
Is there a clearly outlined plan for how to attack the project and meet the objects and goals? In other words have the authors convinced you that they have a sound engineering approach to solving the their problem?
Are the calculations the right ones? Are the calculations explained clearly? Did they learn and apply something from their calculations? Do the calculations support the goals and objectives of the project? Did they use ‘modern engineering tools’ (like CAD, Pro|E, MATLAB, CFD, FEA, etc.)
Was the design driven from their calculations? Was the design good? Was it successful? How did the author’s determine success?
Aesthetics and Format:
Is there a table of contents, list of figures, list of tables, nomenclature, etc.
Is it clear who did what on the team?
Are figures properly captioned and have labels to make them clear? If you pick a random plot, can you understand what is being shown? Are the sizes of the fonts appropriate? Are equations numbered? Is extra material, which is not germane to the technical discussion, contained in an appendix?
What is the overall quality of the report? How does it read? Would you be proud to have your name on it?
For September 22: Use these answers to develop your own report outline and requirements. We will then iterate on this together and agree upon the final content of your report and how it will be graded so that there are no surprises.
