The Fundamental Elements in Electronics
Three Fundamental elements are: 1) Resistor 2) Capacitor 3) Inductor They define four fundamental circuit variables Resistors: Current to Voltage Capacitors: Voltage to Charge Inductors: Current to Magnetic Flux
3
The Missing Element Memristor
_________: Charge to Magnetic Flux ??
4
MEMRISTOR : The 4th Element
Leon Chua in 1971 introduced this concept on the grounds of symmetry. Memristor – The Memory Resistor Missing piece of the puzzle:
5
Properties Two terminal element in which magnetic flux between the terminals is a function of the amount of electric charge that has passed through the device Electronic symbol
6
Memristance Property to retain its resistance level even after power had been shut or remember the last resistance it had before being shut off. Memristance: Charge dependent resistance
7
Same unit of measurement
Resistance not permanently fixed Memristance may be programmed or switched to different resistance states based on the history of the voltage applied to the memristance material. It can reprogram itself according to its previous state for a given output.
8
Implementation In 2008, a team at HP Labs claimed to have found Chua's missing memristor based on an analysis of a thin films of titanium dioxide. The device neither uses magnetic flux as the theoretical memristor suggested, nor stores charge as a capacitor does, but instead achieves a resistance dependent on the history of current.

Analogous System

Memristor behaves like a pipe whose diameter varies according to the amount and direction of current passing through it. The diameter of pipe remains same when the current is switched off, until it is switched on again. The pipe, when the current is switched on again, remembers what current has flown through it.

Applications 1. NANO-SCALE NATURE Memristor technologies could enable more energy-efficient high-density circuits. Information can be written into the material as the resistance state of the memristor in a few nanoseconds using few picojoules of energy. 2.REPLACEMENT OF FLASH MEMORY Can be used in applications that require quick writing and rewriting capabilities, such as in cameras and USB memory sticks.
12
3. REPLACEMENT FOR DRAM Memristor-driven computer would arguably never need a reboot. 4. BRAIN-LIKE SYSTEMS Memristor technology could one day lead to computer systems that can remember and associate patterns in a way similar to how people do.
13
Conclusion The discovery of a brand new fundamental circuit element is something not to be taken lightly and has the potential to open the door to a brand new type of electronics. Memristor will change circuit design in the 21st century as radically as the transistor changed it in the 20th. Note that the transistor was lounging around as a mainly academic curiosity for a decade until 1956, when a revolutionary app—the hearing aid—brought it into the marketplace.
