1 Understanding Proportion of the Earth’s Layers

2 Lt: To understand the proportional model of the Earth’s Layers
Lt: To understand the proportional model of the Earth’s Layers. The purpose is to grasp the size of the layers and what it takes to cause movement of the plates. Today we will complete the model of the earth’s layers. Warm-Up: Which layer has the greatest differences in temperature, pressure and density? Explain CW: Return Signed Daily Catch, Ratio/Proportion of the Earth’s Layers. HW: no homework

3 What’s a Ratio ? A ratio is the comparison of two numbers by division.
If our classroom has 16 boys and 12 girls. What would the ratio be? Also written as 16 boys, 16:12 or 16 to girls Generally, ratios are in lowest terms: 16 = 16/4 = /

4 Ratio, continued Ratios can compare two unlike things:
Joe earned $40 in five hours The ratio is 40 dollars or 8 dollars hours hour When the denominator is one, this is called a unit rate.

5 So, What does Proportion mean?
Proportion is a statement that says two ratios are equal.

6 Thickness of each layer of the Earth…
Thickness of each layer of the Earth….. How could we represent each layer in an measurement that can be held within our science notebook?

7 Metric System….. Meter Stick Centimeter Millimeter

8 How many millimeters are in a meter?
1000 mm = 1 M

9 Proportion, continued If 1 mile equal 1 millimeter what would we do to represent the layers of the earth. Miles = 1mi . so 5mi.= Millimeters 1mm n n = 5, so 5miles equal 5 millimeters

10 So how many millimeter are needed to create an accurate proportional model of the earth’s layers?
Oceanic Crust 5 miles = ? mm Continental Crust 25 miles =? mm Mantle 1800 miles = ? mm Outer Core 1400 miles=? mm Inner Core 800 miles = ? mm

11 In your groups figure out the math for each layer and be prepared to tell me how many strips of paper you would need for each layer.

12 Exit Ticket: What is a model and why are models used in science?

13 Lt: To understand the proportional model of the Earth’s Layers
Lt: To understand the proportional model of the Earth’s Layers. The purpose is to grasp the size of the layers and what it takes to cause movement of the plates. Today we will complete the model of the earth’s layers. Warm-Up: The Crayola crayon company can make 2400 crayons in 4 minutes. How many crayons can they make in 15 minutes? CW: Review ET score, Ratio/Proportion of the Earth’s Layers. HW: complete scale model of the earth layers

14 Math help on proportion.
Solving proportion word problems | MathVillage Did you get the right answer?

15 Instructions Write this caption across your paper.
“The earth’s layers in proportion, 1mile is equal to 1 mm.” Glue a small strip of each correct color to be a key for your model onto the paper Green: Continental Crust 25 Blue: Oceanic Crust 5 Yellow: Mantle 1800 Red: Outer Core 1400 Orange: Inner Core 800 After each color make sure to write the correct layer of the earth and the correct thickness of the layer.
