Retirement planner enhancements
Monthly retirement income estimates now available on the Retirement planner: Retirement income tab provides clearer picture of what members will have to live on at retirement, based on: The member’s savings and contribution levels Additional information entered by the member into the tool Estimates of CPP/QPP and OAS payments As members change the information in the tool, the results will change on the Retirement income tab On October 20, a Retirement income tab was added to the Retirement Planner, which provides an estimate of what the plan member’s monthly income will be at retirement. There will still be a Retirement savings tab where they can see their total projected savings at retirement. The retirement income estimate is based on the savings and contribution levels that are pre-filled in the tool from GLOBAL and any additional information (i.e., Defined Benefit Pension Plan income) that the plan member enters into the tool, as well as estimates of Canadian Pension Plan/Quebec Pension Plan and Old Age Security payments. As they change the information in the tool (e.g., increasing their monthly contributions), the results will change immediately on the Retirement income tab. Why the change: Recently proposed guidelines in the U.S. and Canada are recommending that estimates of retirement income be made available to plan members to provide a clearer picture of how their savings will be translated into retirement income. We are also seeing studies in the U.S. that show this kind of information helps motivate plan members to save for their retirement. With this new research, we believe that providing plan members with a clearer picture of the income they may have in retirement is a benefit to plan members, and will increase engagement with their workplace retirement plan.
