Build new presentations Change existing presentations Focus on commonly used functions Teach some shortcuts The assumption: Everyone has limited Powerpoint background Some things may be a review as we get all to the same level

Inserting a slide Do Insert, New Slide, Choose Slide OR
Right click on a slide on left side / thumbnail Ctl - M

You can also duplicate a slide
Right click on a slide on left side / thumbnail to be duplicated. Choose Duplicate slide Do “duplicate slide” when you want to make a slide that is like a slide you have already created.

Using Text When possible, use a pre-formatted template for text.
You can alter the format as needed.

Inserting Text in a blank slide
Go to Insert / Text box Drag the box to created a text box the size you desire Type the text you want to appear. Next steps: Highlight the text Right-click the highlight You can now change the text size You can now change the text font or Color You can now underline, bold, and italicize the text You can center or left justify the text

Bullets Bullets will call attention to individual items
You can make one column or two column bulleted lists You can change the type of bullets You can change bullets to numbers To change the type of bullets: Highlight the area to be bulleted Go to Home and choose either bullets or numbers Choose the new type of bullets you prefer You can tab to indent your bullets for sub-bullets

Go find an image on Google image search Copy it in. Either: Save to disk and go to insert / pictures Use Snipping Tool Right click / copy / paste

Slide Sorter Slide Sorter view will allow you to see many slides at once and move them around. It is good when you are editing your presentation and need slides in a different order. To get to Slide Sorter: View / Slide Sorter. To return: View / Normal

Changing the Smartmaster
Go to Design Smartmaster choices at top Mousing over the Smartmaster choices will show what the changed presentation will look like You can do some color alterations to the right of the Smartmaster choices after you have changed the Smartmaster

Snipping tool Sometimes there’s no other way to get that picture you want for your presentation!

Undo If you make a mistake, undo will go back step by step. Undo does not work once you have done a file save.

Spell check

Slide show F5 will put the presentation into slideshow mode, starting with the very first slide. Shift F5 will put the presentation into slideshow mode, starting at the slide you had showing in the work window. When you want to show a video, insert a blank slide where the video belongs. When you come to the blank slide, hit ESC and show the video. Shift F5 will bring the presentation back to where you were.

Things NOT to do Don’t do too many fonts. It’s distracting. No more than two or three in a presentation. Don’t go crazy with animation. Also very distracting. Don’t use crazy fonts. They may not work on the Chinese computer in your classroom. We didn’t have success imbedding videos in our presentations. They were not supported on the Chinese systems. It’s better to put a blank slide in, jump out to the video, and do a Shift-F5 to come back to where you were.

Other things You need to use at least a 28 point font for the body of your deck. Don’t use ALL CAPS. The Chinese have difficulty reading this. Don’t be too fancy. Simple is better. Wow them with your personality instead. Don’t be afraid to experiment and try new functions. Just don’t do it when you’re short on time. If you don’t know how to do something, try Googling it. Most of the time, someone will know how to do it.
