Heat Transfer
2
What is Heat? Heat is the movement of atoms in a substance
Heat always moves from hotter object to colder object
3
Heat is transferred 3 ways:
1. Conduction–heat transferred by touching molecules conductors: transfer heat well (metals, cement) insulators: transfer heat poorly (wood, plastic, air) Examples: Frying eggs Hot spoon in soup Bare feet in snow
4
Heat is transferred 3 ways:
2. Convection: heat circulating through liquids or gases Hot air/water rises! When it cools, it sinks. This creates a circular motion
5
Heat is transferred 3 ways:
2. Convection: heat circulating through liquids or gases Hot air/water rises! When it cools, it sinks. This creates a circular motion Examples: Hot top bunk Steam rising Hot air balloons
6
Heat is transferred 3 ways:
3. Radiation: heat transfer with infrared waves feeling heat without touching only way heat can move in a vacuum how the sun heats the Earth Examples: Roasting Marshmallows Heat lamps Dog laying in the sun
