4 SAECG More than 400,000 sudden cardiac deaths occur each year (US) caused by sustained ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. Coronary heart disease accounts for 80% of Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) in developed countries throughout North America and Europe. Results of clinical studies implicate reentrant mechanisms as the cause for these critical arryhthmias Most result from tachyarrhythmias arising from chronic scaring in the myocardium usually seen in post MI patients with decreased left ventricular function.

Useful tool in the diagnosis of patients who have one or more of the following symptoms: ischemic heart disease (decreased O2 to the heart tissue) unexplained syncope (blackout or fainting) Useful in pre-operative patient assessment May eliminate possibilities of sustained ventricular tachycardia Useful in providing risk stratefication Patients recovering from myocardial infarction may time increase the chances of cardiac arrythmias as the heart strengthens.
