1 VECTOR AND SCALAR QUANTITIES

2 FRAME OF REFERENCE - a set of axes relative to which an observer can measure the position and motion of all points in a system, as well as the orientation of objects in it.

3 SCALAR QUANTITY A quantity define by magnitude only (Ex) 5 meters 4 kg
50 kilometers per hour (kph) 60 degrees

4 VECTOR QUANTITY A quantity that requires both magnitude and direction.
(Ex) 5 meters north (5 m N) 35 km NNE 65 newtons to the left (65 N left) 13 m/s down

5 DIRECTIONS 22.5 o W of N 67.5 o N of W 90 270 180

6 VECTOR QUANTITY - Represented by the an arrow; length of the arrow indicates the magnitude and direction of the arrow indicates its direction.

7 GRAPHICAL METHOD = = VECTOR ADDITION
The vectors are added using the head-to-tail method. Magnitude can be measured and the direction determined through the use of a protractor (Ex.) = =

9 EFFECT OF WIND ON A PLANE’S VELOCITY

10 DISTANCE VS DISPLACEMENT

11 DISTANCE – scalar quantity DISPLACEMENT – vector quantity
A car travels 50 km to the East and then 20 km to the West, the total distance traveled is 70 km, but your displacement is 30 km East.  E
