Agenda for the day 1) Set up notebook 2) Correct Homework
3) Notes- 1D Motion 1

CHAMPS Conversation: Level 0 While teacher is speaking
Level 1 Conversations during class activity Help: Raise your hand if you have a question and wait to be acknowledged Activity: Students will actively listen and also work cooperatively Movement: Students will be at their desks Participation: Students will participate in activity Success: Oh yea!
3
What is Physics? It comes from the root word (Greek) NATURE, so it is the study of things that occur all around us (natural phenomenon) Everything in nature obeys the laws of physics, Everything we build obeys the law of physics Tony Stark’s Perpetual Motion Machine 3
4
Mechanics 4
5
Mechanics In Physics, it is the study of motion 5
6
1D Motion… ...or motion in a straight line, linear motion 6
7
Our modern understanding of motion only began in the 1500s
+
8
Reference Frames Any measurement of motion must be made with respect to a frame of reference Example 1) You are on a train travelling 80 km/h, a person on the train walks (past you) toward the front of the train at 5 km/ h. With respect to the train, how fast is the person walking? With respect to the ground, how fast is the person walking? 5 km/h ,85 km/h 8
9
Position Definition- where the object is located
Positions can be positive or negative 9
10
Scalar vs Vector Magnitude only Magnitude + Direction
2) Amount /Size of something 3) Only positive (+) Can be + or - due to direction 4) Distance, Speed Time,Mass, Displacement, Velocity, Acceleration
11
Vector
12
Review Which is scalar, which is vector?
What is the movement of the tornado? 40 mi, East How fast is the speed limit? 70 mph
13
Distance 1) Symbols: d, x, y
2) The measure of “how far” objects are spaced 3) Unit: meter
14
Displacement 1) Symbols: Δx (x-x₀) 2) The measure of “Δ in distance”
from starting point 3) Unit: meter **Δ means final -start (initial)
15
What is the car’s distance, what is the car’s displacement?
The car covered a distance of 25 km and a displacement of 10 km, East
16
Distance vs- Displacement
A football coach paces back and forth along the sidelines- the coach moves from position A to B to C to D. What is his distance covered and displacement? The coach covers a distance of (35 yds + 20 yds + 40 yds) = 95 yards and has a displacement of 55 yards, left.
17
What distance did Tim travel? What was Tim’s displacment?
Tim covered a distance of (3m + 4m) = 5 m and a displacement of 5 m, NE
18
Review What is the distance and the displacement of the race car drivers in the Indy 500? The displacement of the cars is somewhere near 0 miles since they virtually finish where they started. Yet the successful cars have covered a distance of 500 miles.
19
Speed 1) Symbol: v 2) The measure of “how fast”
an object is travelling 3) Unit: meters/second (m/s) 4) Formula: v= x/t = total distance/ total time 5) It is the AVERAGE speed from start to finish
20
Definition- a measure of how fast something is moving
Formula- Speed = distance time Units- mi/h, km/h, m/s 20
21
Average Speed Driving a car (we have lots of stops/starts…so a lot of different speeds), getting to science class. definition- total distance total time avg speed of Usain Bolt = 100 m = m 9.81 s s m mile s = mi **top speed s m h h mph? 21
22
Constant Speed Definition- a moving object that doesn’t change its speed Example- school zone, long highway, jogging 22
23
Graphing Motion A distance-time graph illustrates the speed of an object 23
24
What would no speed (an object at rest) look like?
24
25
What would a constant speed look like?
25
26
The steepness of the slope indicates how fast something is going
26
27
Instantaneous Speed Definition- the speed at one point in time 27
28
Review Is speed a vector or scalar? Is distance a vector or scalar?
Is displacement a vector or scalar? Scalar Vector
