1 Linear Motion – Chapter 2 Background info
Today I will: Define magnitude, scalar quantity and vector quantity Explain the difference between distance and displacement

2 Magnitude Another way for us to say “how much” of something is magnitude Ex. Since distance only has a magnitude it is said to be a scalar quantity

3 Scalar quantity – quantity that has only a magnitude (such as distance) A car travels 50 miles. The cars magnitude is 50 miles.

4 vector quantity – a quantity that has both magnitude and direction (such as displacement) Ex. If I go on vacation and drive 373 miles to Ocean City. After a week at the beach I follow the same exact route back home 373 miles. What is my distance traveled? What is my displacement? 746 miles 0 miles

5 how far an object travels Measured in: feet, miles, meters
Distance how far an object travels Measured in: feet, miles, meters

6 how far the object has been “displaced” from its original point
Displacement how far the object has been “displaced” from its original point From starting point to ending point…Distance from pt A to pt B (path does not matter)

7 What is the difference between distance and displacement?
difference between displacement and distance….displacement is dependent on direction

8 An object in motion must move a distance but does not have to have a displacement.
Motion – an object must move a certain distance over a time period to be in motion Start here with all classes (first period already saw it)
